Workflow automation
Connecting systems so work moves without manual re-entry, with exceptions escalated rather than dropped.
The value is usually in the exceptions. Automating the happy path and leaving forty edge cases to humans often creates more work than it removes.
Idempotency, retries and dead-letter handling are the difference between an automation that runs and one someone babysits.
Mapping the process honestly is the first deliverable. What people actually do is usually not what the documented procedure says, and automating the documented version produces a system that everybody works around.
Instrument the exceptions from day one. The cases that fall out of the automation are the roadmap for the next iteration, and a system that discards them quietly never improves past its first version.
Related terms, in context
The concepts you almost always meet alongside workflow automation.
- Robotic process automation
- Software that operates application interfaces the way a person would, where no API exists.
- Straight-through processing
- The proportion of transactions that complete end to end with no human intervention.
- AI agent
- A system that plans a sequence of steps, calls tools, and changes state in real systems, rather than only producing text.
Where this shows up in our work
Workflow automation is not an abstraction for us. It is a decision we make on live projects. It shows up most directly in workflow & integration automation, agentic workflow automation, where getting it wrong has a cost someone can measure.
If you are evaluating a vendor on this, the useful question is not whether they can define the term. It is what they measure, what they would refuse to do, and what happens in their system when the assumption behind workflow automation stops holding.
