Straight-through processing
The proportion of transactions that complete end to end with no human intervention.
STP rate is the honest measure of a document or workflow automation. It rises over time as edge cases are absorbed.
A responsible vendor baselines it and improves it iteratively rather than promising a high figure on day one.
A realistic trajectory is worth setting expectations around. Well-scoped document automation often starts near half of transactions completing untouched and climbs over months as exceptions are absorbed. A vendor quoting ninety per cent on day one is describing the happy path, not the distribution.
It is also worth splitting the number by document type before celebrating or despairing. An aggregate rate of sixty per cent usually conceals one clean, high-volume format running at ninety and one awkward legacy format running at twenty, and only the second one is worth engineering effort.
Watch the rate over time rather than at a point. A rate that quietly declines usually means the input mix has changed, which is a signal worth catching early rather than discovering in a quarterly review.
