Guardrails

Constraints on what an AI system may do, enforced in code rather than requested in a prompt.

Effective guardrails are structural, permission scoping, output validation against a schema, approval gates, rate limits, and allow-lists on tools.

Prompt instructions are guidance, not enforcement. Anything that must not happen has to be prevented outside the model.

It is worth separating guardrails that prevent harm from guardrails that prevent embarrassment. The first category, permission scoping, spend limits, approval on irreversible actions, belongs in code and should fail closed. The second is usually better handled by prompt design and monitoring, because over-constraining output makes systems that are safe and useless.

Guardrails should fail closed and say so. A system that silently degrades when a check fails teaches everyone to trust it slightly too much, whereas one that refuses clearly and explains why keeps the operator informed and the failure visible.

Related terms, in context

The concepts you almost always meet alongside guardrails.

Human in the loop
Designed checkpoints where a person approves or corrects before the system acts.
Prompt injection
An attack where instructions hidden in content the model reads override the behaviour you intended.
AI governance
The controls, documentation and evidence that let an AI system pass an audit.

Where this shows up in our work

Guardrails is not an abstraction for us. It is a decision we make on live projects. It shows up most directly in ai governance & compliance, ai evaluation & red teaming, where getting it wrong has a cost someone can measure.

If you are evaluating a vendor on this, the useful question is not whether they can define the term. It is what they measure, what they would refuse to do, and what happens in their system when the assumption behind guardrails stops holding.
