AI governance
The controls, documentation and evidence that let an AI system pass an audit.
Governance covers system inventory, risk classification, model documentation, data provenance, human oversight design, monitoring and incident procedure.
In India the DPDP Act applies to personal data in training sets and prompts alike; prompt logs are the exposure most organisations overlook.
The practical starting point is an inventory. Most organisations cannot name every AI system already running inside them, and you cannot govern what you have not listed. That exercise alone typically surfaces several systems built outside IT that carry more risk than anything on the official roadmap.
Start with the systems already running rather than the ones being planned. Most organisations have AI in production that never went through review, and an inventory usually surfaces more than the roadmap does.
Commonly misunderstood: Governance written after deployment is documentation. Only governance designed alongside the system functions as a control.
Related terms, in context
The concepts you almost always meet alongside ai governance.
- Human in the loop
- Designed checkpoints where a person approves or corrects before the system acts.
- Guardrails
- Constraints on what an AI system may do, enforced in code rather than requested in a prompt.
- DPDP Act
- India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, the law governing personal data in Indian AI systems.
Where this shows up in our work
AI governance is not an abstraction for us. It is a decision we make on live projects. It shows up most directly in ai governance & compliance, where getting it wrong has a cost someone can measure.
If you are evaluating a vendor on this, the useful question is not whether they can define the term. It is what they measure, what they would refuse to do, and what happens in their system when the assumption behind ai governance stops holding.
