Why TypeScript for this
Every cutover gets a rollback plan and a reconciliation step. Migrations go wrong in ways nobody predicted, and the difference is whether you can go back.
TypeScript is strongest at one language across client and server, with types catching integration errors at build time. For legacy system modernisation that matters because the failure modes of this kind of system tend to cluster exactly there.

Questions
Can we migrate without downtime?
Usually yes, with incremental migration and parallel running. Some database cutovers need a short window, which we plan and rehearse rather than improvise.
What if nobody understands the old system?
That is common and we treat it as the first work package, behaviour is reconstructed from code, logs and observed production traffic before anything is replaced.
How long does it take?
It depends entirely on scope, but incremental migration means value lands continuously rather than at the end of a multi-year programme.
