Why PostgreSQL for this
Parallel running feels expensive until the first discrepancy surfaces. It is the cheapest insurance in the entire programme.
PostgreSQL is strongest at it handles far more workload than teams expect, with one operational model. For legacy system modernisation that matters because the failure modes of this kind of system tend to cluster exactly there.
The honest trade-off: genuine analytical workloads past a certain scale belong in a warehouse. We say that up front because a stack chosen for fashion rather than fit becomes someone's migration project two years later. We start from the constraint, not the capability, what the system must never do, who signs off, and what happens when it is wrong.
Six weeks to something running in production, not six quarters to a strategy document.
The honest assessment
- What it is
- Our default database, relational, JSON, full-text and vector in one engine.
- Strongest at

- Trade-off

We are not a reseller for PostgreSQL and hold no commission on this choice. Where a different option fits your workload better, the recommendation will say so. That is the entire value of asking us.
What is included
- Dependency and risk mapping of the existing system
- Incremental strangler-pattern migration plan
- Data migration with reconciliation at every step
- Parallel running until the new path is proven
- Rollback plan for every cutover
- Knowledge capture from the people who know the old system
Questions
Can we migrate without downtime?
Usually yes, with incremental migration and parallel running. Some database cutovers need a short window, which we plan and rehearse rather than improvise.
What if nobody understands the old system?
That is common and we treat it as the first work package, behaviour is reconstructed from code, logs and observed production traffic before anything is replaced.
How long does it take?
It depends entirely on scope, but incremental migration means value lands continuously rather than at the end of a multi-year programme.
Alternatives for legacy system modernisation
Same capability, different stack. Each page states its own trade-off.
