Edge inference
Running models on local hardware near the data, instead of calling a cloud API.
Edge inference is the norm in manufacturing, mining and energy, where networks are unreliable and decisions must happen in milliseconds.
It also keeps video and sensor data on site, which is frequently a privacy requirement as much as a bandwidth saving.
The operational cost is fleet management. Fifty edge devices across twenty sites is an estate to update, monitor and secure, and the model is the easy part of that. Teams that succeed plan the update path before the first deployment rather than after the first model revision.
Plan the update path before the first device ships. Retrieving fifty devices from live sites to flash new firmware is the scenario that turns a successful pilot into an abandoned one.
